Moving into the corner office.
Something I have been thinking about a lot in our business and in my personal career is what it means to be a female entrepreneur and leader. I spent a lot of my career working in male-dominated industries. Although I was fortunate to work with fantastic male and female leaders throughout my career, I have certainly experienced the obstacles of being a female on the corporate ladder. This is why I am so grateful to have co-founded Method & Motion with another inspiring female leader and am honoured to work with many amazing female founders in our business.
We had the opportunity to meet with a handful of students as we interviewed for our first internship position; welcome to our new intern btw we are so lucky to have you! Something that stood out to me was the comments about Method & Motion being an inspiration as a female co-founded and led company. I hadn’t considered that our entrepreneurial endeavour provides an example of female entrepreneurship to the younger generation, and this is a call that I take to heart.
I read an article about redefining what it means to be a “boss lady,” and Fellay (2021) writes that young women’s examples of leaders are often lessons learned through movies and literature. Examples of princesses that need to be saved, although I remain a Disney fan to my core! Or that you must be cold-hearted and ruthless to succeed are not the only ways for females to rise to the top. She calls to task the need to be part of the revolution of examples of female leaders that are available. So to this, I say, challenge accepted!
We want to encourage women to aim high and shift the narrative to showcase how two women can create a successful business together. We consider ourselves so lucky to work with amazing female founders like the ones at RainStick Shower, Aangen, SpaceiShare, Aesthetic Loft, Amy Hogan, CityMoguls, and Cleo Social. Did you know that only 11% of startups are female-founded?! Female entrepreneurs shouldn’t be a rarity, and in our business world, they are not!
To all of those young women out there considering entrepreneurship as your path, I want to tell you that it isn’t easy, but you can do it! We hope that our journey can be a small window into how women are working and supporting each other while challenging the status quo for anyone inspired by female CEOs and leaders. To all of the exceptional leaders that have helped me along the way, I thank you. I hope that we can be that for others and continue to take our part in changing the leadership landscape.
