The ride to consulting.

What you may not know about me is that for two years I started an academic journey by going back to school to obtain an MBA. I started out with a specialization in sales leadership but decided to switch paths and move into a newly offered specialization called consultancy leadership, which seemed so much more relevant to the work we are doing at Method & Motion, yay! My first course for consultancy started last week and our weekly discussion post posed the question, why do you want to be a consultant? And, why would someone hire you? This felt like a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with my purpose and share a bit about my personal story.

I have worked as a management and marketing consultant for a couple of years now and it has been quite a journey, to say the least. I first knew that I wanted to become a consultant after many years in my corporate career learning and honing my area of expertise but realizing I wanted to apply my skills in a different way. I appreciated the lessons I learned working at large digital publishing companies, creating marketing strategies for small-medium businesses, managing operations and systems, and leading high-performance teams. My years of experience in these areas is what serves me now consulting with start-ups and small businesses about their go-to-market strategies and providing leadership support to founders suddenly finding themselves in need of a bit of guidance.

Through my time at publicly-traded companies, I found my passion for the neighborhood economy and helping entrepreneurs achieve their goals. However, I found my ability to make the impact I wanted was stifled amongst the processes and competing interests in a large corporation.  An article I recently read mentions living your dream and believing you can make a difference as reasons to become a consultant and those reasons certainly resonate with my story. I have long dreamed about being able to support startups and work with entrepreneurs to make their business ambitions a reality. I believe that helping to grow this part of our economy is important to local communities and society at large.

When I decided it was time to leave my corporate career path and venture into consulting it was important to really assess what I considered my expertise and what I now refer to as my superpowers. We often serve as the marketing team that a small business needs but isn’t at a point where they can hire internally from both a strategic and implementation perspective. My personal area of superpowers focuses on growth marketing, sales, leadership, and analytics. However, outside of these areas, I believe an organization benefits from working with me based on my ability to visualize a path forward and work collaboratively to find a solution out of complicated information. I talked about how you can identify your superpowers in our blog a couple of weeks ago, check it out here if you want to learn more.

One of the best things about starting Method & Motion is that I am getting to actualize a personal goal I have had for myself for years while continuing to learn through my education and apply that back into the business and knowledge base for our clients. I am a lifetime learner so all the lessons that entrepreneurship is teaching us through our own rollercoaster journey are something that we aim to continue to share and grow from, making us continuously better along the ride.
