September’s tight turns, steep slopes, and inversions.
We spend a lot of time talking to entrepreneurs and business owners about the ups and downs of starting and owning a business. This is how the rollercoaster vibe weaved into our brand, and to be totally honest, has been a lot of fun to lean into. Although I feel very versed in talking about this with our clients, experiencing it for oneself is always a different story. For a bit of back story, my business partner Michelle and I launched Method & Motion in June of this year with a mission to provide on-demand management and marketing services to small businesses. We have been steadily growing and as we came into the fall, we were both feeling great about what we had accomplished and what we have in front of us.
September came with some big wins in our business. We were able to pay ourselves our very first paycheck, cha -ching! Wow, did that feel good and like a big milestone for being in our third month of operation. Outside of that we have started to work with some amazing new clients, continued to work with our fantastic long-standing clients, and broker some exciting partnerships with other agencies. Another win is being named a marketing expert with Startup Canada and coming on board with them to support their member communities across the country (I hear Michelle’s laugh as I type this, she knows that I really wanted this partnership and I have talked about it... a lot!).
Our days have felt pleasantly full but not stressful and with the projected new business in the pipeline at the beginning of the month, we were on track to exceed our forecasted sales, what a rush! Despite all the good news, a few unforeseen loops on the track happened, as they do. A couple of projects in our forecast have shifted later in the year, a few unexpected expenses, and suddenly things felt off track. The thoughts of doubt started creeping in that I haven’t given space to since we began the business. How quickly we can let our minds derail us, even with so many good things to celebrate.
When these moments happen, it is a great time to check back in with your plan. Having a solid method can get you back on your game and focused on continuing with forward motion. In entrepreneurship, you can’t let the unforeseen drops overshadow the exciting highs. When you aren’t sure where you are at, your plan acts as the foundation, a solid grounding point to let you re-centre and keep momentum. This has never resonated more than when getting on the ride myself and, I think, gives me an even better ability to work with our clients as we act as their ride operators on their own journey.
So as September quickly ends and we look forward to October, I am energized to keep going and growing, armed with our method and always in forward motion.
